Just womdering what most of you use. I like the Waverly's, but when building to keep costs down, not sure whats the best bang for the $? |

I've tried gold Schallers with ebony buttons. Very nice tuner. Not too expensive. I've also tried the Gotoh 510; a very very slick looking machine, in my opinion. Both are in the 70$ range, if my memory serves me correctly. However, I will definitely have to try Waverleys. Those machines look pretty sweet to me. |

I like some of the grover, Sperzel and schaller tunner's. Grover has an openback tuner similar to a waverly just cheaper in price not quality. StewMac carries it. The thing that I don't like about Waverly is that at one time they were cheap budget hardware. I have some old mandolin banjos with waverly and they are nothing but junk. Now that classic retro styles are in style their prices have skyrocketed. I personaly do not think they are worth the prices they charge. |

I generally use Waverly, though a lot of money they are not expensive. I also like the Schaller Vintage tuners, and have a set of these ready for my next guitar. Sitting on my shelf waiting for a guitar worthy of them is a set of Rodgers that my wife bought me for my 50th Birthday some years ago, now they ARE expensive around $700! Colin |

Gotoh 510s. Waverly's are awesome, but for the money it's the 510. I like everything about'em. |

Check out LMI's Schallers...I think the 16:1's are under $30....nice looking too...I've used 'em several times and they are not junk...I'm headed for the Gotoh 510's now though just to offer something other than the "off the rack" guitars in stores.... |

I have used Waverlys for every guitar except one 12 string. They are great. I do have one set of Gotoh 510 deltas 21:1 ratio. They are in antique bronze and very nice. Here is a photo of them on a Taylor guitar Andy

Mostly Gotohs, 301s until last year, now just 510s and 700s (vintage style), waverlies on one slot head this year. |

Waverly's on all my acoustics. I build it into the base price. And on the electrics generally a schaller mini m6 or the mini Gotoh 510's |

Are Grovers the ones that have the same hole and fastener spacing as Waverlys (in the slot-head tuners), or am I thinking of a different brand? It'd be nice to have the option to easily switch them out. I'm sure I'm going to have some closet-fillers early on, and I'd rather not have $160 sitting on them if they won't see much play. If they turn out wonderful then I'll treat them to Waverlys. I'm also planning on making some as gifts, and it'd be nice to be able to put a decent affordable tuner on it and give them the option to upgrade with no modification to the guitar itself if they want to spend the $s. |

I really like the look of the Waverlys, but the price does seem ridiculous. I've never used them, but I don't undertand how they could perform better than a $70 enclosed tuner.  What is it that some of you like so

The appearance, options and action of the Waverly makes it the best for most if not all folks. I likewise love them. I have been a Grover man both closed and the open back (Waverly look alike kind of) for years. Back in late 60's and early 70's Grovers were considered by most to be the best on the market for acoustics. I have never had a problem with the Grovers myself, like the look and the feel. For Steel String, I like the Gotoh 510's - I have used Grovers and Schallers, but I love the look and feel of the 510's better. For nylon string guitars, I really like the "industrial" look of Gilbert Tuners. They are really well made and have a great action. Ray |

I used a set of the "M6-style" Gotohs on the solitary steel string I built. Gold plated. Can't beat 'em, I don't think, for value. Priced reasonably, and they work great. For classicals, I prefer the Schaller Hauser-style tuners. These tuners are also very reasonably priced, but honestly they are some of the smoothest and most accurate tuners I've ever used. So these are the standard tuners on my classicals. Sure, if a customer wants some fancy Alessis or Fusteros or Sloanes or Gilberts or Rodgers, I'm only too happy to oblige. Hey, it's their money.
